The Phase Field theory and other enhanced finite element formulations such as the Extended Finite Element and Meshfree Methods appear to be very promising computational methods for the simulation of fracture. The quantitative capabilities of these methods as compared to classic finite element formulations for linear elastic or nonlinear fracture mechanics are under scrutiny by the scientific community in order to increase their use and confidence when applied to real problems.
The present mini-symposium aims at fostering the interaction between mathematicians and engineers to better quantify the potentiality of the phase field and enhanced finite element formulations in relation to:

  • simulation of static and dynamic fracture;
  • quantitative comparison with standard FE formulations: criticalities and advantages;
  • quantification of the various model parameters using benchmark experimental tests;
  • applicability to heterogeneous materials and composites;
  • applicability to multi-scale problems.
